Not feeling motivated to practice your instrument? Feel like playing the guitar is more of a chore than a hobby?
Don’t worry – you’re not alone. Even the most passionate musicians struggle to stay motivated when learning guitar.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just plain bored with your guitar, use the following five tips to re-gain your motivation and re-discover your love of music.
1. See live music
There is nothing quite like live music. It’s inspiring, mind-blowing, even life-changing. If you’re feeling unmotivated, get out and see fellow musicians perform, whether that’s at a rock concert, a music festival, a recital, or your school’s talent quest.
2. Mix up your practice regime
Doing the same thing again, and again, and again, and again is bound to get boring. So, if you find yourself approaching practices the same way day after day, it’s time to change things up. Here are a few ideas:
- Challenge yourself to compose an original tune
- Play the piece you are working on one section at a time, mastering each chunk before moving on
- Play the piece you are working on really, really slowly
- Play along to a backing track or drum machine, or sing along
- If you usually practice in the evening, try practicing in the morning
3. Follow your own musical interests
When it comes to music, each and every one of us has our own musical taste. A great way to feel motivated to practice your guitar is to follow your musical interest. Learn a song or two by your favourite band, or play the theme tune to your favourite movie. Remember, playing the guitar should be fun!
4. Set goals
Maybe you’d like to move up a Grade in the Trinity College London by a certain date, or master a challenging song before your birthday, or learn to play a particular scale at a particularly fast tempo. Write down these goals, and track your progress. This will remind you just how much you are improving, even if it doesn’t feel like it.
5. Play with fellow musicians
Playing music can be a social activity, and fellow musicians can help inspire and motivate us. If your friends or family members play an instrument or sing, why not start a band or jam together? You could also join a jamming group, or brave an open mic night.
